Kazuya Mukae, a single man looking to put his past behind him, moves to work on a farm in the mountainous region of Katsuyama, Japan. He desires solace in simply growing the Mizuna green, a vegetable that grows deep in the snow–its taste known to be bitter, but sweet with harsher winters. Despite his best efforts, Kazuya finds that a fresh start is all but easy. The town is steeped in history, and to blend in, Kazuya tries diligently to learn. Much to his surprise, he realizes that the city is kind, even to someone like him. His stoic farming master, Mitsuhashi-san, teaches him far more in the trades of life than farming, customers at the restaurants he works at introduce him to the “Sagicho Matsuri,” a festival that welcomes spring to the region, and soon enough, he finds himself falling for Kaho, a kindergarten teacher with a full smile. While attempting to focus his all on growing the best Mizuna green, he finds himself torn between his self-inflicted need for atonement and the undeniable strength of community and acceptance that surrounds him. The more he realizes the warmth of the town, the more he questions if he deserves such kindness. As the snow melts, and the Mizuna green shows its head, he must decide what kind of love he allows himself to have.
