My Sorry Life

Kozue Nomoto

A couple keeping secrets from each other tries for a baby. By the time the woman learns the truth, it’s too late. Is there a future in the path she’s progressed along by pushing others aside? As much as she struggles for air, the surface remains far from reach.
Kei Tamai (33), an assistant producer at a regional TV station, is trying for a baby with her live-in boyfriend Yoshi (33). He says he’ll marry her once she gets pregnant, has given up his dream of making it big as a comedian, and frequently skips work, which has gradually cooled Kei’s feelings for him. She secretly takes contraceptives, and devotes herself to her job. One day, Kei’s irritation with the whining Yoshi reaches a peak, and she starts to walk out on him. In desperation, he tries to stop her by dropping a bombshell: “I’m pregnant, so let’s get married.” As Kei’s career and relationship go off the rails, she is forced to confront her own obliviousness.

Her lifelong tendency toward envy has pushed her to shine a spotlight on characters who grit their teeth and persevere, in her ongoing short film career. Noted works include “From the Bottom of the Vortex” (2015) starring Sayaka Hashimoto which won the Tokyo International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival’s Grand Prize, and “Tsugi wa Nani ni Umaremashouka” (2019) starring Ryoka Neya, winner of the Fukui Short Film Festival’s Grand Prize.
DIrecoter Statement
This film’s protagonist is self-centered. Before she realizes it, chasms open up between her and her lover, her friend, and her colleagues. When you become obsessed with something, it might be a necessary way for you to advance to the next stage in life, but are you taking advantage of someone else on the way? The story was inspired by my own experiences, and is a warning of sorts. At the same time, I’ll always want to cheer on this woman who stumbles but gets back on her feet.
